Data and citation

Every chart on this site reads data.json. tools/export.py builds it from the study file results.json without changing any value. Both files are public.

Terms used here

Fiscal year (FY)
The federal year, October to September. FY2026 ran from October 2025 to September 2026.
Obligation
A binding commitment of federal money on a contract action. Net obligations subtract money taken back (deobligations).
FPDS
The Federal Procurement Data System, the public system where agencies report their unclassified contract actions.
NAICS
North American Industry Classification System: the industry code on a contract.
PSC
Product and service code: what was bought. Code 18 is space vehicles; AR is space research and development.
IDV
Indefinite delivery vehicle: an umbrella contract that agencies place orders under.
HHI
Herfindahl Hirschman index, a score for how concentrated buying is, from 0 to 10000. A high score means a few agencies place most of the money.
OTA
Other transaction agreement: a flexible agreement outside the standard contract rules. OTAs are not reported to FPDS.
413,031
Unique contract actions in the study.
418,428
Raw records read from the FPDS feed, before the overlap between the NAICS and PSC queries was removed.

data.json adds three things to results.json and changes no value: the counts behind each share, recovered exactly from results.json; the citation fields; and the methods text. The dictionary below describes data.json. Shares are fractions from 0 to 1. Dollars are nominal: not adjusted for inflation. Other transaction agreements (OTAs), classified awards and grants are not in FPDS, so no figure here includes them.

Data dictionary

Field in data.jsonMeaning
source, study_date, versionThe study file the figures come from (results.json), the date the study was run, and the version label used in the citation.
results_sha256SHA256 fingerprint of results.json, so a copy can be checked against the published one.
reporting_lag_daysThe longest reporting lag for Department of Defense actions in FPDS, from the study limitations.
raw_entriesRecords read from the feed across all slices, before removing duplicates.
unique_actionsSeparate contract actions after removing duplicates by record kind, agency ID, contract number (PIID), modification number, transaction number and parent IDV contract number.
headlineThe four home page figures. Each has path (where the value sits in results.json), format, label, definition, value, and n with n_label, the count shown beside it.
full_scope, space_onlyThe two views. Each holds overall (all years) and fy (one entry per fiscal year, keyed by year). In results.json the full scope sits at the top level and the space only view under space_only.
actionsContract actions, new awards and modifications, signed in the period.
awardsNew awards: actions with modification number 0 (new contracts, orders and IDVs).
dollarsNet obligations: the sum of obligatedAmount over all actions signed in the period, after deobligations, in nominal dollars.
competed_reportedNew awards that report whether they were competed; the denominator of competed_share.
competed_shareShare of new contracts marked as open to competition (FPDS codes A, D, E, F or CDO). Fraction from 0 to 1.
competed_with_offersCompeted new awards that report an offer count; the denominator of single_offer_share.
single_offer_shareShare of those awards that received exactly one offer.
top_agencyContracting sub tier agency with the largest positive net obligations.
top1_share, top3_shareShare of obligations placed by the top agency and by the top three, among agencies with positive net obligations. The home page and the demand page both use top1_share.
nasa_shareIn overall for the space only view: NASA obligations over all net obligations, including agencies with negative totals. Kept for audit; the site shows top1_share.
hhiA score for how concentrated buying is. A high score means a few agencies place most of the orders. Scale runs from 0 to 10000.
entrant_award_share, entrant_dollar_shareFrom FY2021: share of competed new awards, and of their dollars at award, won by companies whose first action in this dataset (which starts in FY2016) falls in the same year or the four before it. An upper bound. Null before FY2021.
entrant_award_share_fy21_26, entrant_dollar_share_fy21_26The same shares pooled across FY2021 to FY2026.
entrant_award_share_fy24_26, entrant_dollar_share_fy24_26Space only view: the same shares pooled across FY2024 to FY2026.
psc_family_shareShare of obligated dollars by product and service code group: 18 space vehicles, AR space research and development, other research and development (codes starting with A), other products (numeric codes), services (codes B to Z).
pricing_shareIn overall: share of obligated dollars by contract pricing type. Small negative values come from net deobligations.
vendorsDistinct companies in the fiscal year. Each company is counted once, using its parent company ID (UEI, the federal unique entity identifier), then its own UEI, then its older DUNS number, then its name.
multi_agency_vendorsCompanies with actions from two or more contracting sub tier agencies in the same fiscal year.
multi_agency_dollar_shareObligations of those companies over all obligations in the fiscal year.
multi_agency_dollar_share_fy_pooledThe same share with numerators and denominators pooled across fiscal years.
countsAdded by tools/export.py: the counts behind each award share, recovered exactly from results.json and checked to be whole numbers. competed and entrant by year; competed_fy21_26, entrant_fy21_26, competed_fy24_26, entrant_fy24_26 pooled; dollars_fy16_25, the sum of the closed years.
textThe methods, limitations, space only definition, completeness lines and check script description, copied word for word from the study.
refreshThe rebuild steps, in order, naming each script.
